"Religion...is the opium of the people."
Karl Marx
Was Karl Marx right? Perhaps we find death difficult to cope with and invent a God who gives us life after death. Our psyche is unbalanced. Maybe we don't have mental aptitude to manage the difficulties of life without trusting in something beyond us.
I suspect that we all have our personal crutches. Whether by evolution or the design of God we look for something bigger than ourselves. We reach out to lean on something when life is hard or when faced with death.
Some people lean on their Faith, others lean on family and friends. Some find solace in work, drugs, sex or alcohol; and some trust in science. The question is not whether we have a crutch but what our crutch is. Does it hold
our weight?
Speaking for myself, faith in God has allowed me to throw away many of my crutches. I have strength in life that allows me to face the difficulties and hard times and still walk tall and strong.
I'm not bent over a crutch like a dishevelled old man but I walk with confidence. I believe that I have fewer crutches than many people who do not have Faith.
Karl Marx replaced one form of "opium" with another, an ideology that literally ruined and destroyed the lives of millions.
When faced with death or difficulty what will you lean on? Does it stand-up to scrutiny; is it true? Have you tested it out? Are you prepared for your
own death?
Anyone claiming to be self-sufficient is living in a fantasy. Every one of us leans on something or someone. It is wise to make choices about what we lean-on rather than allowing our subconscious and circumstances to decide
for us.
