The late 20th century saw the evolution of a new worldview, which embraced spirituality but denied absolute truth. Truth became a fluid, relative substance that was different for different people.
"Does this new worldview make sense?" Can truth really be relative or is it by nature, true or false, right or wrong?
I support the move away from dogmatism, where people concentrated on their differences rather than what they had in common. However, logically there has to be a point of truth, where contradictory things cannot be mutually true.
I could sincerely believe that the world is flat. My belief might be sincere but I'd still be wrong. It is the same with our religious beliefs; sincerity is unimportant compared to truth.
In my quest to find and prove truth, I've studied the basics (and sometimes depths) of other religions. Whilst I grew-up in a Christian family and accepted Christian Faith at a young age, it's wise to make sure Christianity is true. Most religions have claims of truth that are mutually exclusive.
If we believe one religion's statement of truth then it automatically falsifies another. I cannot accept Jesus' statement that He is the only way to God and believe that Islam is the only right way to Allah.
The question arises that maybe God is pleased with effort rather than getting it right. Maybe a particular religion doesn't have everything right but God would forgive the little things?
Surely our attempt to reach God is honourable and will please Him? It would seem unethical for God to be displeased with those who are genuinely
seeking Him.
The heart of the Christian message is that we cannot reach God by religious effort or by following a particular creed. We believe that it impossible to find God except through person of Jesus Christ. God is so far beyond us that we could not hope to reach Him via effort.
I like to see Jesus as a bridge that spans between us and God. If we want to get to God then we need to cross that bridge. A bridge is only good if it spans the whole distance from one bank to the other. If it stops, a mile short of the other bank it does not take us to our destination.
We need to make sure that the things we believe stand-up as truth. Something can never be right if it is fundamentally wrong. Jesus claimed to be the only truth; other religions make similar exclusive claims. It is important to find out if the claims stand-up to scrutiny. Is the life they claim to give
actually real?
